Sunday Writer Resources: Funds for Writers
One click gets you to a plethora of grants, jobs, contests, and opportunities
As promised, my Sunday posts will talk about resources and tools for writers, and I found a terrific one called Funds for Writers. An experienced professional writer curates the site, and it has a lot of viable listings of grants and markets that cover all different kinds of writing. It’ll take some time to peruse the whole site—you can, of course, skip the blog and other peripherals if you’re only interested in the revenue parts.
Pay special attention to her nav bar at the top of each page. Irresistible tabs like
Markets—where to send your best writing
Contests—the big gamble
Submissions—opportunities to get published
Grants—free money we all dream about
I found the site to be pretty well-organized and easy to navigate, but some users feel it could use a facelift to make it less time-consuming. Headings and labels are clear. Each list item includes deadlines, descriptions, contact info, links—everything you need to access the opportunity. Keep in mind that browsing can be time-consuming. It’s necessary to read or skim each entry to determine if you fit the requirements. Some are quite narrowly focused.
Contests and submission requests often have a tight window. Maybe visiting the lists weekly would help.
If you’d rather not spend time browsing the site, C. Hope Clark, the owner, offers a free newsletter. I can’t comment on its value—I haven’t seen it yet. I like that she’s all in about empowering and helping writers—she even pays for submissions that follow her specific guidelines. $100 for previously unpublished stories, $25 for reprints older than 90 days.
Overall, I’d encourage you to have a look. Remember that she tends to focus on traditional publishing rather than self-publishing and independent publishing. I’m thinking there must be good funding resources in those areas. Maybe I’ll look into it.
Good luck with your explorations of these resources!
Brilliant! Thanks so much.
Thanks, Maryan. Very helpful.
